Winchester Park Foundation Seeks Grant for Community Garden
The Winchester Parks Foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit dedicated to serving the citizens of Winchester, is seeking the Nature’s Path Community Garden grant. The Winchester Parks and Recreation Department has a goal to develop a community garden program in an existing neighborhood park with tangible foodstuffs and educational and recreational activities.
In the Winchester Community Garden, gardeners will be required to use organic gardening practices. One unique aspect to the garden is that leaf compost will be provided by the City ‘s Public Works Department for free. In addition, heirloom variety plants that can be found throughout local seed exchange groups will be readily available. The program will be coordinated by the Winchester Parks Department.
The garden space, being on publicly owned land, will belong to the community. It will be maintained by two groups of gardeners. One will be citizens who do not have room or permission to maintain a backyard garden and will be growing food for themselves and/or their families. The second group will be volunteers who will devote an entire plot to a local food bank or nonprofit with food needs.
