Two Local Doctors Honored by Virginia Academy of Family Physicians
J. William Kerns, MD, and Frank X. Dennehy, MD, have been recognized for their clinical and teaching excellence by the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians. Both are physicians with Front Royal Family Practice, members of the attending medical staff at Warren Memorial Hospital, and faculty of the Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency Program, established in 1997 by Valley Health and the Medical College of Virginia/VCU.
Dr. Kerns was named the VAFP’s Family Physician of the Year for 2010. He has practiced medicine in Front Royal for 32 years having founded Front Royal Family Practice in 1978. A graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School, Dr. Kerns completed his residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Family Medicine Fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. He is an Associate Clinical Professor with the Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency Program, and has served as medical staff president and a member of the Warren Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.
Dr. Dennehy received the 2010 VAFP Teacher of the Year award. He has been Residency Director and Associate Clinical Professor with the Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency Program since 2005. Dr. Dennehy received his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, completed his residency at Penn State/Good Samaritan Hospital Family Practice Residency, and completed a fellowship with the National Institute for Program Director Development.
“It’s such a privilege to have physicians of this caliber on our medical staff, providing quality care to patients in our community and guiding the training of the next generation of family physicians,” said Patrick Nolan, president of Warren Memorial Hospital. “Drs. Kerns and Dennehy have been instrumental in building the reputation and success of the residency program, attracting excellent candidates and shaping their development as fine family physicians who, we hope, will want to remain in the region.”
Dr. Kerns and Dr. Dennehy’s honors, conferred at the VAFP Summer Conference last month at the Homestead, are the result of a state-wide nomination and selection process by the Academy.
