NEW Interactive Mapping Websites For Winchester

GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. Do not let the name deter you from a great tool as you’ve been probably using  Winchester has its own GIS website here. The division was established in 2004 and has been expanding its capabilities ever since.

The GIS division acts like Google maps but provides more detailed, city-related information that helps the public and City departments find information. You won’t find things like restaurants or shops, but you will find property boundaries, zoning districts, voting locations, utilities, etc. All of this information is collected and stored digitally. Then, mapping software is utilized to produce maps for print and to disperse online.

Winchester has had an online interactive mapping website for years now, but if you haven’t taken a look before, you should now. There are now 5 NEW interactive mapping sites that each target a different department and provide various information to the user, including:

  1. General mapping- This website displays basic information such as street names, property boundaries, buildings, aerial photos, schools, parking, fire station locations, voting wards/precincts, school districts, etc. Using this application would be best for locating a street or address or finding out what voting ward or school district a building is in.
  2. Tax Maps- If you’ve ever been to the Assessor’s office, you may have seen a large printed map book. This website provides all that same information except it’s interactive and saves on paper! Search for properties by owner name, tax map number, record number or address to get additional assessment information.
  3. Zoning Maps- Like the name implies you will find any information related to zoning in this map including the historic district and various overlays.
  4. Utilities Mapping- Locating utilities can be tricky since they are underground but this application makes it easy! Please excuse the lack of utilities information as we are in the long process of collecting all water meter, valve, sewer manhole, cleanout, etc. locations.
  5. Floodplain Mapping- This website is used to see if a structure falls within the floodway, 100 year floodplain, or the 500 year floodplain.

If you have any questions about any of these websites or how to use them, please feel free to contact the GIS Coordinator, Erin Carver at 667-1815, ext. 1487.
