John Kirby Day Jazzfest to be Held August 7 in Jim Barnett Park
This year’s Coalition for Racial Unity’s Annual John Kirby Day JazzFest will be held in the War Memorial Building’s Active Living Center in Jim Barnett Park on August 7th from 2-6 pm.
The event will celebrate the major contribution to Jazz made by Winchester native
son, John Kirby. This year’s programs will feature great Jazz music for listening and dancing, preformed by three accomplished Jazz ensembles. Box lunches will be offered by John Kirby’s niece, Robin Williams. A John Kirby CD and pictures will be available for purchase.
John Kirby and his sextet were popular in the world of the Big Band Sound during the 1930’s and 40’s and was often referred to as the “Biggest Little Band in the Land”
“The epitome of Chamber Jazz in the Swing Era was the sextet [Charlie Shavers on the trumpet, two reeds, Billy Kyle on piano, bass and drums] formed by John Kirby” declared Piero Scaruffi, in his noted work THE HISTORY OF JAZZ MUSIC’.
The event will promote community health services with the proceeds going to support the work of the FREE MEDICL CLINIC. The Coalition will also use the event to promote it’s annual Blood Drive to be held at the War Memorial site on August 13th from 2-7 pm. The Drive honors Dr. Charles Drew, the African- American physician, scientist and humanitarian whose system for storing blood plasma revolutionized the medial profession. Dr. Drew established the first American Red Cross Blood Bank and served as its first director throughout the Second World War.
During the JazzFest program the Coalition will present a portrait honoring Dr. Drew to the American Red Cross’s Winchester Chapter to honor their service to our community.
