Gary G. Ganoe to be Interim Fire and Rescue Chief in Winchester


City Manager Jim O’Connor announced the appointment of Gary G. Ganoe as Interim Fire and Rescue Chief effective May 29, 2010. Ganoe currently serves in the Fire & Rescue Department as a Captain and the City’s Fire Marshal. Chief Frank Wright is retiring May 28, 2010 with over 35 years of service to the City of Winchester.

Ganoe has a long history with the Fire and Rescue Department beginning as a volunteer with South End Volunteer Fire Company in 1981. He began his employment with the City in the Fire & Rescue Department on October 15, 1984. During his 25 year career with the City, he has progressed through the ranks as a Lieutenant, Assistant Fire Marshal, Captain and Fire Marshal.

Ganoe received his high school diploma from James Wood High School in 1977 and has taken numerous courses at Lord Fairfax Community College, the Virginia Fire Marshal Academy, Shenandoah University and Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy. He is a 2001 graduate of the City’s EXCELL Leadership Academy.

O’Connor stated that he is confident in Capt. Ganoe’s ability to lead the department during this period of change. A national search for Fire & Rescue Chief began in mid-April
