Their excitement was soon matched by their project partners at NW Works.

Members of Foxcroft School’s new Explorations in Engineering class, the girls were delivering garden beds they had designed and built for NW Works, a non-profit that provides vocational training and employment opportunities for 175 adults with disabilities. NW Works had an idea for starting a new commercial kitchen venture to engage their clients, but they needed to find a way for physically handicapped individuals to grow the herbs, vegetables and lettuce for the project.

So, last fall NW Works asked a team of Foxcroft engineering students to design planting beds that would be accessible to its handicapped and wheelchair-bound clients. The design had to be simple enough for NW Works’ clients to replicate in their woodshop so they can build more boxes to grow the program.

Foxcroft seniors Sydney Rose, Charlotte Wright, Kim Kluwe, and Maeve Couzens researched plant depths, wheelchair heights, and ergonomics associated with different disabilities and desiged a tiered planting bed that would be accessible to all. They made a presentation to NWWorks and the design was approved!. With some help from their teacher, Dr. Maria Eagen, and Foxcroft School carpenter Danny Borror, the girls then built the beds on campus.

On Wednesday, the beds were installed by Rose and current Engineering students Olivia Gotwald, Allie Dietz, Mckenzie Canard and Jennifer Williams. As they worked, the girls enjoyed the camaraderie and support of many NW Works clients. The clients are thrilled that they would be able to grow their own food, and their enthusiasm was contagious.

The plans for the beds were also delivered to NW Works, which has a wood shop and will be able to replicate the planting beds in the future. NW Works CEO, John Brauer, is so pleased with the experience that hehopes to continue the relationship with Foxcroft. Plans are already in the works for another project next year.
The beds are one of a half-dozen projects for non-profit organizations that Foxcroft School engineering students have completed this school year, using the EPICS High School model created at Purdue University. Other projects that have been or will be delivered soon include educational tools for Social Studies standards for Banneker Elementary School in Middleburg; an interactive museum display for the historic Aldie Mill that will allow visitors to experience how grain through the mill; outdoor trail guides for the Hill School in Middleburg, and proposals for a test and full-scale solar power project at Foxcroft.
